Mum pays tribute to tragic Rutherglen man

The heartbroken mum of tragic Rutherglen man Craig Thomson has paid tribute to her lost son.

Twenty-five-year-old Craig, who was affectionately known as ‘Stuta’ after Argentine footballing legend Gabriel Batistuta, was knocked down by a Nissan Qashqai car while crossing Dalmarnock Road near to its junction with Downiebrae Road at around 11.15pm on Wednesday, December 5. He was going to the Tesco superstore to get shopping.

Police and an ambulance attended, but the former Stonelaw pupil was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mum Kathleen Lee Thomson, of Cambuslang Road, was becoming concerned about her son was when police came to her door at around 1am on the Thursday.

She told the Reformer: “The police said they were trying to trace relatives of the victim of a road accident and asked me if my son had tattoos. That’s when I knew it was probably him because Craig had his wee boy’s name tattooed on his stomach and he had ‘Mum’ on his wrist. I was devastated.”

Kathleen said Craig lived with her and had a four year-old son called Dylan. He was well liked throughout the community, she added, and attended Stonelaw High and Burgh Primary School. He turned out for Rangers Boys’ Club before an accident that stopped him from playing.

His funeral, held on Saturday in Rutherglen Cemetery, was well attended.

Kathleen added: “Everybody liked Craig; you could see that by the number of people that was at his funeral.

“There must have been at least 300 people in attendance.

“He was a ‘Jack the Lad’ type of boy, his main interests were football, the bookies and women!

“He had lots of friends though and he loved his wee boy so much.”

She added: “I’d also like to thank the Beer and Wine Co on the Main Street and the Taste of Indian for raising money for Craig, and to everyone who came to pay tribute.”
