Burgh Primary pupil wins Overtoun Park competition

A BURGH Primary School pupil brushed off the competition to design a logo for Overtoun Park.

The challenge was set to schools across the community by Rutherglen Community Council.

Burgh, Bankhead and St Columbkille’s Primary all chose to enter the competition.

And 10-year-old Burgh pupil Megan Boyd showed her artistic skills as her logo was selected as the winner.

She won a £25 gift voucher for her efforts, making everyone at her school very proud.

Megan’s design is a colourful badge, which shows a swing set with the sun shining over head.

Chairman of Rutherglen Community Council, Tommy Rooney, explained they were trying to think up a logo for the park when it was suggested they let the younger generation design it.

Tommy said: “We were having our usual meeting and we were trying to come up with a logo so we decided to ask the schools to allow the pupils to design a logo.”

Tommy believes that the competition will help to raise the profile of the park among the younger generation and encourage them to make use of it’s facilities.

He said: “We were trying to raise the profile of the park and let the youngsters see that it’s their place as well.

“People often want flower beds, which we like, but we would like to try and the encourage the younger people to use the park as well as the older generation.

“Burgh, Bankhead and St Columbkille’s were all involved and Megan’s was the best.”

And Tommy admits that all the entries were of a high calibre, making the decision to pick the best a very hard one.

“It was a very nice design, colourful and it really epitomised the spirit of the park,” he added.

“All the entries were impressive though and I’m glad I wasn’t involved in picking it!”

Burgh head teacher Miss Munro was extremely proud of her pupil.

She said: “We’re all really proud of Megan. She did extremely well.”
