Stonelaw High Pupils compete for Musician of the Year

A MUSICAL extravaganza was given at Stonelaw High School when the pupils from S3 to S6 competed for the young musician of the year.

There was singing, saxaphone, clarinets, flutes, trumpet, guitar, drums and piano as music from across the spectrum was celebrated.

The adjudicators for the evening were, Mr Graham Barclay, and Mr Gary Kelly.

Mr Barclay was recently appointed as assistant music co-ordinator within the instrumental services at South Lanarkshire Council.

Mr Kelly is set to join the successful music department at Stonelaw in the new year as a classroom teacher.

After the competition Mr Barclay commented on the very high standards from all students, making special reference to pupils from S3 for their skills.

The winners were: S3/4 Christopher Keane, Trumpet; S5 Lauren Welsh, Drums; S6 Kevin Sturgeon, Piano.

The music department at Stonelaw has grown in numbers over the past few years and now boasts a Preparatory S1 Band, a Samba band, Soul Band, and Junior and Senior Concert Bands as well as junior and senior vocal ensembles.

The school will be presenting a Christmas concert in Stonelaw Parish Church on Tuesday December 15 at 7pm.
