Garden area blossoms for primary kids

GREEN fingered pupils from Calderwood Primary School have been hard at work building a new garden area.

The primary four class, alongside new teachers Katie McKay and Lindsay Mackay, were delighted to finally piece their garden area together after scooping £3000 as part of a Royal Bank of Scotland enterprise project last year.

The project allowed the school to design and build a new sustainable garden in the playground area of the Rutherglen primary.

And the P4 class were in total control of the situation, from planning, buying, digging and potting. They even organised the initial garden design competition to the invitations for the special official opening.

Depute head teacher Linda Gardner told The Reformer: “The primary four class did exceptionally well with their gardening skills, and design.

“In fact it was two of our primary seven pupils, Rachel Woodley and Gemma Bonner, who designed the garden after winning the primary fours design competition. They loved to see their design come to life.

“A special thanks must go to all the fantastic help from our parents, grandparents and friends and it was wonderful to see the whole Calderwood community pull together as a team.

“We are so proud and will look after our garden for years to come.”

Rutherglen MSP James Kelly performed the official opening.

He said: “The garden opening was a big success. The pupils and parents put in a tremendous effort to turn out a wonderful garden.

“A special tribute should go to the two primary four teachers, Miss McKay and Miss MacKay.

“The garden is something special for the school to remember the amount of work that they have put in during their probationary year. I wish them well.”
