RUTHERGLEN MSP James Kelly has given his backing to the development of a high-speed rail link between Scotland and London.
The link would see fast trains pass through Rutherglen in each direction.
Mr Kelly said: “There is no doubt that the development of a high-speed rail link would bring jobs to Scotland. It would significantly reduce the journey time between Scotland’s major cities and London.
“It has been shown that faster travel and quicker connection help boost the economy and create jobs.
“It would also be crucial in the important battle against climate change.
“A high-speed rail link would encourage more people to travel by train as opposed to air.
“This would help the environment by reducing carbon emissions.”
The MSP’s comments came as the high-speed rail link between Scotland and London was added to the list of major projects in the National Planning Framework.
Welcoming the move, James Kelly added: “I know that my Labour colleagues on the Transport Infrastructure and Climate Change Committee have pushed hard for high-speed rail to be made a priority.
“Its development will be to the benefit of Scotland and I would encourage the SNP government to act so that we can begin to reap the benefits that this project would bring.”
