Stonelaw hold a Day of Change

THE UNICEF Day of Change was marked by a non-uniform day and coffee morning which raised almost £900.

The money raised will go to Papua New Guinea and the Gambia to pay for fresh water supplies and education for children.

The school is a UNICEF partner school which means Stonelaw is closely involved with UNICEF and is working towards Rights Respecting School status led by a committee chaired and formed by the pupils themselves.

The UNICEF education officer also regularly works with pupils to help them understand the UN Children’s Charter about their rights and responsibilities.

A group of senior pupils are taking part in an action-packed trip to London where they will visit Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the Theatre Museum, go backstage at Drury Lane Theatre and see performances of Wicked and Blood Brothers.

They will also attend a seminar at the British Board of Film Classification and take part in a Jack the Ripper tour.

The Art and Computing departments, together with South Lanarkshire’s Art Development Officer are running a project for a group of pupils using photography to document the history of Rutherglen and how the area has changed.

They are helped by industry professionals and it is part of a programme to show what photography is like as a career.

All 220 S1 pupils enjoyed a performance by David Graham called Natural High which is part of the Council’s drug education programme designed to show how life can be enjoyable without drugs.

Film Education have provided free performances at the GFT of Slumdog Millionaire which over 60 pupils enjoyed as part of their English course while a younger group of pupils are set to experience the film The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

S3/4 Maths geniuses took part in the United Kingdom Maths Challenge for their age group and can win bronze, silver or gold awards.

Pupils in S2, S4 and S5 are at different stages in the options process deciding which subjects they would choose for further study.

Information evenings, talks and sessions in social education to explain about jobs and careers as well as explain the qualifications like the new Scottish Science and Language Baccalaureates on offer at Stonelaw for the first time next year.
